Israel’s parliament voted this year to deport and strip citizenship from terrorists receiving money from the Palestinian Authority. In the aftermath of Hamas’s Oct. 7 pogrom in which its terrorists murdered 1,200 Jews, Israel also started sending Palestinian residents back to Gaza for encouraging the terrorists by, for example, celebrating the killers on Facebook.

This does more than satisfyingly scratch the itch decent people feel to expel bigots who aid vile people whose sadism has been matched rarely in the long history of human depravity. Removing terrorist helpers also demonstrates Israel’s laudable determination to take practical steps to defend itself against dangers within, just as it is also taking action to eliminate the external menace of Hamas.

Our own country should do likewise — take sensible steps to remove people who are privileged guests in the United States and have no right to stay independent of U.S. goodwill. This nation is an excessively generous host, and it is time to set limits. The federal government should start by deporting noncitizens who act against American interests or — which is the same thing — flout the principles on which the nation was built.

All over the country, pro-Hamas demonstrators have been celebrating anti-Jewish genocide for the past six weeks, often using violence to demand the U.S. betray our ally and help our enemy. Six police officers were injured in such action outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters on Nov. 15. A depressing number in the pro-terrorist Left is American. But many are not, and when they can be identified, they should be thrown out.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology President Sally Kornbluth recently reneged on a threat to expel students who held unauthorized protests because she feared the malefactors would have their visas canceled, forcing them to go back where they came from.

That’s absurd. Expulsion should be seen as a feature, not a bug, when students break the rules to support a genocidal group designated by the federal government as a terrorist organization. Why harbor such people? What possible case is there for allowing them to enjoy residence and education at America’s universities? Why should Americans tolerate the presence of antagonists who spit in their faces, spew falsehoods against ourselves and our close ally, and propagandize for killers who make it plain they detest the U.S.?

They don’t just detest it. They put that detestation into murderous action. Not only is Hamas killing Americans, but it is also part of the global Islamist movement. Its paymaster, Iran, plotted to kill members of the U.S. government on American soil. Islamists are trying to spread their noxious regime around the world, to subjugate infidels, including here in the U.S. Every particle of our founding beliefs cries out against this malevolent goal.

The U.S. has been losing self-confidence for decades and has done nothing to stop — has indeed done much to encourage — the growth of odious anti-American theories and prejudices. It has reached the point where too many people in political office don’t recognize the national interest and anyway lack the will to pursue it. The country needs to recover the ability to act in its own interests. It should start doing that by sending alien thugs home.
