GOLDSTEIN: The Song Shul makes beautiful music

It’s not often you have to reserve tickets in advance to attend a jam-packed Saturday Shabbat (Sabbath) service at a Toronto synagogue.

But The Song Shul, founded three years ago by the husband and wife team of Simon and Aliza Spiro — Simon as cantor and spiritual leader, Aliza as creative director — is unique.

The most recent Shabbat service, held twice-monthly at the Bialik Hebrew Day School at 2760 Bathurst St., was billed as “Broadway Shabbat.”

It combined the words of traditional Jewish prayers and songs with Broadway-calibre singing by Simon and the a cappella choir he leads — the Toronto Festival Singers — using familiar melodies from The Lion King, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, and other hit shows.

The guest speaker was Broadway veteran Noah Weisberg, currently starring in the lead role of Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Toronto’s Princess of Wales Theatre, who ended his engaging talk on the importance of family by singing the musical’s signature........
