Why Hindutva arose

Golwalkar laid down the principles of Hindutva well before Independence but Hindutva as a dominant political entity has remained dormant until now.

One could argue that the Ram Mandir movement that resulted in the destruction of the Babri Masjid was the culmination of Hindutva, but if it was so, then why is the mandir nowhere being built even when Gowalkar’s ideology rules the land. Admittedly the mandir-masjid dispute had political connotations that gave a lift to Hindutva, but if the dispute was left to itself, Hindutva would be as stranded today as the mandir itself.

The twenty-first century has dramatically altered the political landscape of India. The Hindu who self-identified before firmly as a secular has moved rightward; the Hindu who was right-wing has become alt-right. The Parivar has dethroned the Congress as India’s natural party of governance. Congress autopsists such as AK Antony have come up with a remedy, that the Congress should shed its pro-minority tag. Rahul Gandhi is thereby proving himself to be a born-again Hindu.
