Celebrating death differently

I attended the funeral of my aunt in Delhi, and as usual it was unusual and in keeping with my family’s unorthodox way of doing and dealing with all things concerning life and death. I walked into the home and everyone was eating chicken biryani and mutton curry.

Traditionally non vegetarian is not cooked on such a day, but my cousins smiled and said, “This day is about mom. Mom wouldn’t touch a vegetable, so to celebrate her, or to show respect, we should respect her ways and what she would have wanted. She would be mortified to see vegetarian food being served”.

At the cremation ground, despite the definite grief and sadness pervading, everyone milled around sharing wonderful memories and stories of aunty anne and all her ways. When the pandit asked for her “Gotra”, everyone got really confused and frantic calls were made to figure out what it could be.
