At any football club, at any time, there are all sorts of personal distractions that have the potential to affect performance.

The Lions faced an unusual situation when WhatsApp messages shared between some, but not all, players on an end of season trip to America inadvertently appeared via iCloud in full view of partners at home.

Sam McClure reported on 3AW on Good Friday that those messages affected some relationships and had the potential to affect team unity.

That had all faded into the background as far as the Lions were concerned until the season started with three unexpected losses, and potential reasons for the form lapse were sought. Suddenly, an area outside the game entered the public domain.

That’s football and modern media.

The Lions are adamant that the fallout for some from the trip has had no effect on group dynamics or performance and that any conversations that needed to be had happened pre-Christmas. Their skipper Harris Andrews, who was not on the trip, and football manager Danny Daly are likely to front the media to tell the world that on Monday.

What effect it has had on certain individuals and their mindset during the pre-season and the opening rounds is impossible to measure. And given this is a football column rather than Married at First Sight, we won’t be delving into that personal space except to say you’d imagine it wouldn’t help.

What we can point to are some other potential, more measurable, reasons the Lions are not playing how they hoped at the start of the season.
