Sydney's trains out of time, out of order and off the rails

Living in Sydney is delightful until you come into contact with anything requiring sensible foresight from the government. So I wasn't exactly shocked to read about the chaos on the trains this week in a city where the only reliable form of transport is walking. Our trains have always been erratic, from the weekend trackwork closures to those inexplicable stoppages between stations – congested line ahead? Driver toilet break? Waiting for Godot? Who knows?

The network hasn't changed much in decades besides a few short links and an airport line that makes taxis seem like good value. And while the new Metro is certainly an ambitious, expensive project, I'm suspicious of any new Sydney transport project whose route takes in a casino.

A good train network takes cars off the road, and creates bustling economic hubs around its major stations, whereas ours encourages people to drive. Getting between NSW's biggest cities, Sydney and........
