Oh dear. As local election results start to trickle in, it’s not looking good for the Conservatives. Rishi Sunak’s party has, at the time of writing, lost more councillors than it’s gained with key battlegrounds like Hartlepool and Thurrock being secured by Labour. And Keir Starmer’s lefty lot are rather enjoying revelling in today’s Tory misfortune…

While council and mayoral elections took place on Thursday, votes on police and crime commissioners across England and Wales were also being carried out. In a spot of more positive news for the party of government, this morning’s first PCC by-election result revealed the Conservatives had held Lincolnshire, with Tory incumbent Marc Jones retaining his seat. Mr S is sure they’ll take the small wins where they can…

But digging further into the fine detail, it’s not all rosy for Sunak’s boys in blue. In news that will hardly delight the Tories, there was a 16 per cent swing from the Conservatives to Starmer’s party in this vote. It was certainly a point that Shadow Paymaster General Jonathan Ashworth was keen hit home, as he opined on the BBC with co-interviewee and deputy Tory chairman Jonathan Gullis.

‘That’s quite a swing, isn’t it…’ the Labour MP remarked, before turning triumphantly to Gullis: ‘I mean — you’d be toast, if there was a 16 per cent swing to Labour.’
