Ford has given the EcoSport, the original compact SUV, a much-needed makeover. But the question is, is it too little, too late?

You will be surprised how superstitious car companies are at times. Ford India, for example, decided to do the first drive of what they claim is an “all-new” EcoSport in Goa like they did the launch of the original EcoSport four years ago now. The driving route was similar. And the first EcoSport turned out to finally be Ford’s first big hit since the Ikon. It bought into the consumer demand for a smaller Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). It has been a segment that has exploded over the past few years and the success of the Maruti Brezza and the slightly larger Creta owe their genesis to the EcoSport. But the EcoSport was dated, its rivals had brought in far superior interiors, especially infotainment systems and on the outside, headlights got daytime LED running lights and projector headlights. Even Honda got into the game with the WRV, a butch version of the Jazz.

So to the updated Ecosport, or “all-new”, depending on who you believe, Ford says that three-quarters of the parts are new. Indeed when you look at the car head-on, it looks very different. Especially the headlights and the fog lights. In some parts of the world, eyelift surgery is very popular, where narrow eyes are made to look large. And this car........
