NZ momentum on carbon transition

2 0 0

A commitment to cut greenhouse gas emissions by the bosses of 60 New Zealand business heavyweights is the latest in a series of promising moves to help shift the nation towards a low-carbon economy.

The new Climate Leaders Coalition involves businesses that together, and including their supply chains, account for nearly half of the country’s emissions. Climate Change Minister James Shaw noted that business groupings in other countries had made such commitments, but this degree of emissions influence was unprecedented globally.

The 60 chief executives have committed to measuring and reporting their greenhouse gas emissions, and working with suppliers to keep levels down. They also backed the Climate Change Commission now being established and the creation of law-enshrined carbon budgets, a proposed part of the Government’s Zero Carbon Bill.

Their announcement yesterday follows the Farming Leaders Group commitment to work alongside the Government to achieve net zero emissions from agriculture by 2050 — announced in a joint editorial statement........
