The spectre of a severe drought looms in sparsely-populated Balochistan and nearly half of the province which constitutes 43 per cent of the country’s total landmass is at risk. The drought threat is largely man made and is believed to have been caused by deep well pumping in western parts of the province over the last few decades. Four districts — Naushki, Chaghi, Kharan and Makran — are counted among those prone to drought which has affected land, water resources, animals and plants.
