Stirring words that truly resonate with teenagers

The true value of words is determined by the person who hears them, not by virtue of who says them.

I came to this realization after reading winning entries in "Watashi no Oriori no Kotoba Kontesuto," an annual contest sponsored by The Asahi Shimbun inviting junior and senior high school students to share their most memorable quotes. There were more than 30,000 submissions this year.

The grand prize went to Momono Toyama, a student at an agricultural high school in Kumamoto Prefecture.

The quote she submitted was, "Find your own roots and keep watering them."

Born in Osaka, Toyama wanted to study agriculture, but her parents and teachers were opposed. The........
