Shocking death toll means it’s time to use some selfie control

While visiting Kyoto's Kiyomizu-dera Temple some years ago, I was filled with apprehension when I saw a tourist taking a selfie on the temple's famed deck that juts out over a steep hillside.

Obviously aiming for a "perfect" shot, this tourist had one foot braced against the deck rail and was leaning out precariously, holding out the selfie stick as far and high as it would go. Talk about tempting fate.

Nowadays, I encounter such scenes in tourist spots around Japan. But the people doing this invariably look so happy and unafraid, it makes me feel like a party pooper for preaching against this activity.
