Senichi Hoshino was full of passion, but not self-righteous

Looking back on his performance as a professional baseball player after retirement, Senichi Hoshino once observed that he had never been a first-class player. Hoshino added, however, that he had never contented himself with being a second-class player, either. He aspired to be a “super second-class guy,” so to speak.

“Although I was second rate, I was confident that I could sometimes beat or at least match a first-rate opponent if I showed strong determination.”

Despite being a star pitcher in university baseball, Hoshino, much to his chagrin, was not drafted by the popular Yomiuri Giants.

The vexation he felt then made him a fierce fighter who took on the strong with a huge combative spirit.
