Rugby's Onishi urged tackling, disarming of saber-rattlers

During the New Year's holiday, I enjoyed an exciting rugby match at the Prince Chichibu Rugby Stadium in Tokyo's Aoyama district.

The stadium has been the venue of many big rugby matches that shaped the history of the sport in Japan, but it is scheduled for demolition prior to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Thinking about its demise saddens me.

In one legendary game played there in 1971, Japan narrowly lost to England. Tetsunosuke Onishi (1916-1995), then the coach of the Japan National Rugby Union team, reminisced later, "That game represented the culmination of my theory of rugby."
