Relief as peace returns to island escaped convict made his hideout

Ultramarine is a deep, clear shade of blue that does not exist in nature. Because of this, it is the perfect color for depicting fantastic scenes in Buddhist-themed paintings, according to a book by master Nihonga (Japanese-style painting) artist Ikuo Hirayama (1930-2009).

He also noted that ultramarine reminded him of the shades of the Seto Inland Sea around his native Ikuchijima island.

The Setouchi Shimanami Kaido Expressway, 60 kilometers long, consists of 10 bridges that link the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. It opened in 1999.
