LDP incapable of honest debate even within its own ranks

Since last month, I have heard one well-known haiku by Matsuo Basho (1644-1694) being quoted repeatedly in reference to the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's rigidly restrained presidential election campaign.

The poem in question goes to the effect, "Speaking out/ My lips are cold/ In autumn wind." Simply put, it means that silence is golden.

Basho prefaced this haiku with this quote from the Chinese classics: "Do not point out someone's weakness, nor boast about your own strength."

Apparently, he himself lived by this maxim.

But Basho's style of self-effacement does not belong in the world of politics.

Particularly in any LDP presidential election campaign, each........
