“Tairyo” (Big catch), a poem by Misuzu Kaneko (1903-1930), is set on a beach where a large haul of sardines has been brought in. But this is not a celebratory poem.

The poet’s empathy is with the fish: “On the beach, it looks like a festival is in progress/ But in the sea, a funeral will be held/ For tens of thousands of sardines.”

Another work, titled “Nakanaori” (Making up), appears to portray two girls who have had a falling out. They run into each other on a footpath set among rice paddies, both having come to pick Chinese milk vetch flowers.
