Girl’s slaying takes innocence out of walk home from school

When I was an elementary school pupil, coming home from school felt so much more liberating than going to school. Why was that?

Toshiko Kanzawa, a children’s book author, was inspired to produce a collection of poems titled “Hyosatsu” (Nameplate posted in front of one's home) when she came across giddily happy children who were on their way home from school.

One poem goes to the effect, “Early afternoon/ Three boys coming home from school/ Reading aloud names on ‘hyosatsu’ in front of homes along the way/ Sometimes stumbling on how to read them and trying to guess.”

This must have been a little game they made up, proud that they were........
