A promise, by its very nature, is meant to be kept. But unfortunately, that is not always the case.

A poem by Yumi Aihara goes: "It's hard to keep a promise/ But I make a promise for one year ahead." The psychology here is that even though one cannot be always sure of being able to keep an immediate promise, it may become possible later on.

Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) famously declared, "The best way to keep one's word is not to give it." In other words, you shouldn't make a promise you know you can't keep. And the collorary of this is that if you do make a promise, then you must deliver at all costs.
