Author Hiroshi Kato, who died on April 7 at age 87, was once a frustrated law student at the University of Tokyo.

Unable to focus on his law studies, he had his nose in works of literature, his real passion. He was enduring restless days in spring 1954 after failing some courses.

That year, the job market was exceptionally tight. The signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement the year before had ended a special economic boom in Japan.

“My father was already dead, and I had to find employment to support my mother and grandmother,” Kato recalled. “I gave up my dream of pursuing a literary career.”
