Top SDF officer must reflect on self over South Sudan logs flap

The reliability of remarks by the top uniformed official of the Self-Defense Forces has come under question at a time when disarray continues in the Defense Ministry over the issue of Ground SDF daily logs.

Ministry officials initially explained there were no available daily logs written by GSDF peacekeepers who were in South Sudan, because corresponding documents had been discarded. They later did an about-face and disclosed daily logs in response to a freedom-of-information request, saying the documents had been found within the Joint Staff Office.

It turned out, however, that daily logs were not only kept in the Joint Staff Office but also within the GSDF. Katsutoshi Kawano, chief of staff of the SDF Joint Staff, vacillated in his remarks about if he knew this fact or not.

During a news conference on April 12, Kawano said he received a report from a subordinate in late January last year that the daily logs were kept in the GSDF in the form of data........
