OPINION: Will the proposed new Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court for Hamilton address the real cause of our mushrooming hard drug problem or merely put a plaster on a symptom of the affliction?

In a response to the growing use of methamphetamine and other hard drugs in and around Auckland a new specialist Alcohol and Other Drug Treatment Court was established in an Auckland pilot scheme in 2012 based on models operating in Australia and the United States.

Early results are such that Hamilton City Mayor Andrew King and others want a similar system for their community. But is it too early and is the new court the answer to what is one of the most serious threats to vulnerable people we have seen in a long time?

Clearly the current system is not halting the spread of methamphetamine use in spite of harsh sentences for those few dealers and users who get caught.
