OPINION: After what seems like years since the Christchurch earthquake sequence, "Share an idea", a litany of official and some unofficial consultation events, Regenerate Christchurch has revealed its assessment of a land use plan for the residential red zone.

This has been no small exercise. First the residential red zone is nearly twice the size of Central Park in New York and four times the size of Hyde Park in London, and has the opportunity to reaffirm Christchurch's history and image as a city where open space and access to nature are part of the fabric of living here.

Equally important, the size and scope of the land allows us to reflect on past mistakes with the opportunity to position ourselves globally as a city that values sustainability and is prepared to explore new and different ways of living within the grain of nature.

Finally it gives all of us an opportunity to reflect on our collective Māori and Pākehā history and values, and find new ways of collectively addressing the water and climate change challenges of the 21st century.
