Fireworks need to fizzle out

In 1605, plans by a group of men to blow up the Houses of Parliament during the state opening of Parliament on November 5 were well under way. A character called Guy Fawkes was found guarding the hidden gunpowder that had been prepared for the task.

Guy Fawkes was subsequently tried for treason and sentenced, along with his co-conspirators, to be hanged, drawn and quartered. He didn’t survive the hanging so was relieved of the torture, but his body was still quartered.

Over four centuries later, here, on the other side of the world in modern Aoteoroa, we are still celebrating the foiling of the gunpowder plot and its grisly outcomes.

This is an event that has no cultural or historical bearing on our country. However,........
