The strange aftermath of concussion

In a moment, everything can change. The life you've come to know and take for granted flashes in front of you. What's left is the new ordinary.

Our new ordinary means slower starts and longer sleep-ins for one of us. It's low-lit rooms and minimal screens. It's the boyfriend, sitting around, restless, frustrated, caged-in like a Labrador puppy wanting to run outside, having to retrain his brain to do all the little things it should already know. It's me explaining to people that he has a concussion, a head injury, as a result of falling and hitting his head on the side of a vanity unit and knocking himself out.

People look surprised when I say it happened six weeks ago and he's still not back at work. He "presents well", they say, scrutinising him more closely,........
