The Golden Bachelor finally made his decision—and Slate editor-in-chief Hillary Frey may never forgive him for how he did it. While Gerry Turner’s choice wasn’t exactly surprising, that doesn’t stop the finale from being any less brutal. “I am going to have nightmares tonight, hearing Leslie sob about never getting chosen, not just on The Golden Bachelor, but ever,” she writes. But even though she may not have won Gerry’s heart, Frey argues that Leslie comes away from the show the real winner.

And Michelle Herman explains what the show got right about life in your 60s and 70s.

And back when Kissinger turned 100 earlier this year, Fred Kaplan took a sharp look at his bloody legacy, and how it has left a deep stain on America’s reputation around the world. It’s worth revisiting now.

All the wrong lessons ✍️

One more story about Kissinger from us, actually. On April 10, 1945, Henry Kissinger was among those who liberated the concentration camp that held Mark Joseph Stern’s grandfather. In a powerful piece, Stern explains how Kissinger took all the wrong lessons away from the Holocaust.
