The United Way of Sarnia-Lambton campaign is 60 per cent of the way to its $1.4-million goal this week.

“We are continuing to slightly outpace last year at this time,” said the campaign’s Vicky Ducharme. “I am pleased to report we have now raised $840,000 with six weeks remaining.”

“We have been consistently about one per cent ahead of the 2022 campaign pace since mid-August,” Ducharme said.

The campaign still has a long way to go, Ducharme cautioned, and there are still many employee campaigns running and more yet to kick off. So she remains hopeful this moment will carry the United Way through to the campaign’s conclusion at the end of the year.

The community’s overall largest employee campaign, Imperial, is about to wind down, with followup canvassing to be done. That campaign is on pace to meet or exceed last year’s totals.

Nova Chemicals, the area’s second-largest campaign but the biggest with a matching corporate donation, is already ahead of last year’s totals, and its match deadline is Nov. 27. “I encourage all the Nova Chemicals retirees to get their contributions into the United Way before that Nov. 27 deadline to be eligible for a Nova Chemicals match,” Ducharme said.

Arlanxeo is also encouraging their retirees to make their 2023 United Way contributions to be eligible for the Arlanxeo match, also coming up at the end of November.

Dow Chemical employees just commenced their employee campaign this week, and Lambton College employees will soon kick off.

St. Clair Catholic District school board wrapped up its employee campaign, but a few followups remain before totals are known.

Lambton Kent District school board has completed its first week of campaigning and will conclude at the end of November.

Across Ontario, all provincial ministries kicked off their United Way campaigns Nov. 1, including in Sarnia-Lambton. Provincial government employees will campaign until the end of the month.

The review process to determine which agencies get funding and at what level in 2023-24 has also just begun.

The agency review process is a long, in-depth process to determine what services are most needed in our community and what agencies provide those services, Ducharme said. “We know that inflation is affecting not only families and seniors, but also the funded agencies, especially those that provide food and transportation.”

This review process involves many local volunteers on the community investment committee and board of directors, which will make their final decisions in mid-January, about three weeks after the campaign has been completed.
