Tory troubles muddle Peterborough MPP race

Like the P.G. Woodhouse reference to a spanner in the works, the political demise of former Ontario Progressive Conservative (PC) Leader Patrick Brown has injected substantial uncertainty into the upcoming provincial election.

Certainly, Ontario PC leaders have proven their capacity for timely self destruction. John Tory’s 2007 proposal for the public funding of religious schools and Tim Hudak’s 2014 surprise proposal to slash 100,000 public sector jobs were both campaign killers. Patrick Brown’s dizzying tumble in an era of hyper sensitivity to sexual misconduct allegations may well produce the same result.

The rumours of Brown’s activities at the time he served as the MP for Barrie had been afloat for some time. While it is tempting to imagine Liberal skulduggery as the politically motivated source for the media reports on the accusations made against him, Michael Corleone’s admonition in the Godfather Part II to “keep your enemies........
