SNOBELEN: Wynne waging class warfare on Tim Hortons

6 1 36

Not many people remember the dark days before Ron Joyce invented coffee.

Back in the day, coffee drinkers could enjoy a nice cup of perked java at home.

The well-to-do might get a decent cup at a high-end restaurant.

But working class folks who craved caffeine were not so blessed.

Either they resorted to barely drinkable instant coffee (and even worse non-dairy creamer) or they played coffee shop roulette.

Sometimes they would get a cup of warm dishwater.

More often the offering would be a brew of black, acidic tar that had sat on a burner for a couple of hours.

Ron Joyce must have consumed a lot of that tepid brew working as a police officer in Hamilton.

Ron Joyce left and Tim Horton.

In the late 60’s he teamed up with iconic Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Tim Horton and opened a coffee shop.

(Full disclosure – I always wore number 7 when I played minor league hockey and one of my most cherished possessions is a Tim Horton player card.)

Joyce was a coffee........
