Can we please deal with the refugee issue like adults?

After days of name-calling and one-upmanship between the Ontario and federal governments over asylum-seekers flooding into Canada, it’s good to see that calmer heads have now prevailed. We need our leaders, irrespective of political persuasion, to work together – not fire volleys at each other.

What’s happening on our borders and in cities is a humanitarian crisis too important to be turned into political football. This should not become a wedge issue exploited for political gain. We know how immigration and refugee issues have divided people and torn countries apart in other parts of the world. We don’t want that here.

No doubt the massive influx of refugee claimants into Canada has strained resources to the breaking point and taxed the patience of some our leaders. Toronto has been particularly affected, with more than 3,000 asylum-seekers taking up spaces in shelters used by the homeless. Of immediate concern however, is about 800 refugee claimants who are temporarily housed in college dormitories that must be vacated by Aug. 9 to........
