Jabalpur: Residents of a village in Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur district set a liquor shop on fire after the body of an eight-year-old girl was found in a lake, the police said on Friday. The family members of the victim have alleged that accused were drinking in the shop before committing the crime.

After her body was recovered, the angry villagers, including the mother of the girl, alleged that the victim was raped and murdered, after which her body was thrown into the lake by a person or a group of persons who had alcohol at the liquor shop, that was set on fire.

“The girl’s body was found on Tuesday night. A short post-mortem suggests she was physically assaulted,” news agency PTI quoted Sonali Dubey, Additional Superintendent of Police, Jabalpur (Rural), as saying.

She added, “The situation is under control. Police have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order. Her short post-mortem was conducted on Thursday. We are awaiting the detailed autopsy report. We are investigating whether a single person or a group committed the crime and whether she was murdered and the body thrown into the lake.”

In the meantime, state Congress chief Jitu Patwari slammed the Madhya Pradesh Government and claimed that crime in the state has set a 30-year high under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.

“The people of Jabalpur must teach the BJP a lesson for such a state of affairs. CM Yadav must speak on this incident,” he added further.

Recently, a woman along with her husband and other family members burnt the genitals of a man in Ujjain after the victim merely spoke to her. According to the police, the accused burnt his private part with a hot iron rod repeatedly even as he continued to apologise. However, no one had any pity for him.
