Justin Trudeau, SNC-Lavalin and Liberal support in Quebec

I was there in Park Ex the night Justin Trudeau announced he was running for the leadership of the Liberal Party of Canada. The packed room went wild. Anglos, francos, new immigrants and descendants of immigrants cheered him on. They saw him as prime minister, and they were right.

In Quebec, however, the reception for Trudeau’s support for multiculturalism is less enthusiastic, particularly from the francophone majority. But whether some like it or not, Quebec is a diverse nation and has been one forever, dating back to the early days of British rule when Jews came from Europe. (Only Roman Catholics had been allowed to settle in New France.)

Diversity is highly preferable to boring sameness. I lived in Ahuntsic for 10 years, when it was almost 99-per-cent squishy white bread, after 10 years in multicultural MoWest/N.D.G. How I missed the faces, the foods, the languages. I wrote a piece about this for the Huffington Post that got me sackfuls of scorn and applause, about 50-50.

That’s pretty much where Quebec........
