The IDF Is an Army, Not a Synagogue

The report in Sunday’s Haaretz that Home Front Command commanders had confined to base soldiers who refused to wear a kippa or a skirt when teaching in state-religious schools should be a warning light for the public. The kippa is not part of the Israel Defense Forces uniform and the army has no authority to punish anyone who refuses to wear one. This is a serious case of religious coercion and abuse of the army’s punitive authority, aim at deterring secular soldiers from refusing to wear one in the future.

Indeed, the response of the IDF Spokesman’s Office indicated that this was not official policy. It said soldiers cannot be forced to wear a kippa or a skirt against their will. The office said that if a school requested that soldiers comply with religious codes of dress, the soldiers can choose........
