Hethersett Woodside Primary and Nursery School previously held the highest rating from the regulator following an inspection in February 2007.

The rating saw the school exempt from inspection until 2020, with Ofsted backlogs meaning it was not until January this year it finally received its latest full assessment.

And inspectors questioned whether governors had been doing enough to hold leaders to account and ensure standards didn't slip in between the inspections.

The education watchdog has downgraded the school's overall rating to 'requires improvement' - the second lowest available.

They said "weaknesses" in the school's curriculum had led to pupils having gaps in knowledge and that some subject leaders did not have a "clear understanding" of how well pupils are achieving.

However, inspectors did say that after a period of instability, improvements were being made at the school - particularly in terms of pupil behaviour.

The report reads: "The school is improving. A new headteacher is in place and is working alongside the leadership team to quickly bring about the necessary changes.

"The school knows there remains work to do to develop the curriculum in other subjects."

Louise Mainwaring, who took over as headteacher in September, said: "We were pleased that inspectors recognised our ambition and determination to swiftly improve our school further

"We are very pleased inspectors recognised the significant challenges in transition and in leadership, which have impacted our school over a number of years.

"Our community and children were very positive about our school and we are pleased that inspectors recognised the children's positive behaviour and attitude to learning.

"We have taken confidence from the inspection and we are all committed to giving all our children the best possible education experience."
