There’s no getting away from it, everyone – losing against Truro City was a pretty horrible way to end what was a pretty abominable year for Torquay United. Just when it looked like we would at least finish an awful 2023 on a good run, that loss at Chelmsford City, and then the bleakest of Boxing Day defeats against a team we really should be beating – well, that took the biscuit.

At the end of the Truro defeat, a section of the Popside sang ‘we want Johnson out’ again – and the song prompted more than a few head nods around the rest of the ground. It turns on a sixpence, this game. Five wins – four in the National League South and one in the FA Trophy – changed the atmosphere at Plainmoor. There was less of the ‘Johnson out’ and more of the ‘Yellows, Yellows, Yellows’ – but when you lose to a team like Truro – no disrespect to them, they did a great job on the day! – it hurts. It hurts bad. Real bad. And people lash out.

I am pretty sure that more fans would want Johnson to stay around in 2024 and finish the job in hand – as he has said, the goal is promotion and nothing less is really acceptable. But the clamour for change kind of comes and goes as Torquay rise and fall. Seventh right now, two games ago they were second and catching up with leaders Yeovil Town. Now Town are 13 points ahead of us again. It feels a bit like one step forward, one step back at the moment.

But let’s not start 2024 with a negative column, Mr Hughes – let’s pack away all that stuff with the tree and the tinsel, and those lights you keep forgetting to turn off. Let’s start afresh with a prediction of a win against Eastbourne. I am going to say 3-0 – a brilliant Brett McGavin free kick for starters; then a Ross Marshall header from a Lewis Collins corner. And let’s top that off with a thing of beauty from Dillon De Silva – cutting in from the right and sweeping the ball home.

McGavin was unable to drive the team on his own on Boxing Day – but his form in recent months has been superb. I can’t believe I am saying his name in the same breath, but McGavin’s movement on the ball, thoses shimmies and turns to get away from a player and move into space, often has me dreaming of the great Jason Fowler, surely one of the most natural talented footballer ever to wear a Torquay short. So if I am handing you that baton, Brett, please don’t let me down.

Of course we miss Tom Laplsie. Who wouldn’t? The midfield dynamo is the perfect partner for McGavin and if those two are back together again this weekend, praise be to Jason! But that injury list is a worry – and one wonders if Gary has spent much of the holiday season on the blower trying to find cover to help us along.

Despite saying ‘December, December, December’ – it is now January and Aaron Jarvis is still out. Who knows when we will see Kevin Dawson? And having Brad Ash and Theo Williams also out now as well leaves the Gaffer seriously short on resources. I hear Aaron Downes has been upping his game in training to catch Gary’s eye.

But, remarkably, it’s not really defenders that we need. The centre-back partnership of veteran Dean Moxey and whippersnapper Ollie Tomlinson has been good – especially in that winning run – and Ross Marshall’s at right back is a tick for me. Archie Harris is proving himself at left- back – and even young Callum Thomas stepped up when needed and looked good enough.

So it is strikers and a midfielder that I hope the Gaffer found under the Christmas tree. I don’t care who put them there – Santa, Clarke Osborne, Mrs Johnson, the boy Lee. And I hope when Gary unwrapped these presents he had a big smile on his face. Because we should all want a Big Gary Smile throughout 2024 – in fact, that’s my New Year’s wish: A Big Gary Smile to lift all of our spirits in 2024 – starting this weekend when we beat Eastbourne and turn our attentions again to the FA Trophy.
