Saints skipper Stephen McGinn was hailed as Premiership class after finally breaking his goal duck for the season and sending his side a step closer to the promised land.

The Paisley playmaker grabbed the crucial second and ran the show as the Buddies brushed off Dumbarton to move eight points clear of stuttering Dundee United in the promotion race.

McGinn – making his 100th start – is looking to lead his side to the top flight and boss Jack Ross is convinced the midfielder would shine among the elite. He said: “Stephen is a Premiership player playing at this level.

“He has been taking a bit of stick because he hasn’t scored this season. It’s not like him because he has always popped up with goals in his career.
