Parliament's new fence is an ugly sign of the times

Less than 30 years after Romaldo​ Giurgola's​ iconic parliament house was opened as a highlight of Australia's bicentenary celebrations it is now being hidden behind a ring of steel intended to protect the occupants from possible terrorist attack.

The design of the 2.6 metre high prefabricated barricade, which started to go up this week, has already been almost universally condemned as intrusively ugly and a betrayal of the democratic principles embodied in the Italian-born architect's competition winning plan.

Leading architects, Glenn Murcutt​ and Ken Maher, have described the fence as "terrible", saying it will compromise the "moral rights" held in the building.
