Withdraw Aung San Suu Kyi's honorary Canadian citizenship

In March 2012, with much fanfare, Canada’s then Conservative Government presented honorary Canadian citizenship to Aung San Suu Kyi, who is now the de facto Burmese leader after many years as the voice of opposition in that country.

If there were ever a cautionary tale with respect to the need to be grudging with such national honours one would be hard pressed to find a better example than this one.

Glancing back to the days leading up to Aung San Suu Kyi’s honour from the Canadian government one can forgive those in power in this country for thinking at the time that presenting her with honorary citizenship seemed like a grand idea. She had for many years been the voice of opposition to an undeniably repressive military regime that effectively confined her to house arrest for over 15 years. Her perseverance in opposing........
