A COALITION of human rights and civil society groups in Malaysia has denounced a religious court’s decision to sentence two women to caning for having lesbian sex, saying the punishment was akin to “torture”.

The sentencing comes amid polarising public debates over the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) community in the Muslim-majority country.

The coalition called Justice for Sisters, comprising 10 non-governmental organisations, also called on the government to reverse the decision and repeal laws that criminalise LGBTQ individuals based on consensual sexual acts.

“Criminalisation of consensual sex between adults is a gross violation of human rights,” the coalition said in a statement.

“Consensual sex acts between adults is not a crime.”
